Careers In Accounting
Individuals who select one of the many careers in accounting generally have
to obtain a Bachelors degree from a college or university. However, many have
successfully landed an accountant position with only a two-year degree. There
are several careers in accounting available to finance and business graduates.
These occupations include working for a large corporation, or for a small business.
Larger corporations are ideal for individuals who want to advance in the accounting
field. These companies provide entry-level professionals the opportunity to
grow within a company. In fact, some senior financial consultants began their
careers working in accounts payable and receivables.
Entry-level careers in accounting include positions as a staff accountant,
accounting clerk, and A/R & A/P assistant. Although these positions generally
require a four-year degree, companies that are willing to train may consider
hiring an applicant with minimum experience and education. These applicants
will likely begin their accounting career working as an assistant to a staff
accountant. Their duties would include assisting with invoices and payments,
scheduling payment arrangements, maintaining records and files, and performing
any other duty related to the job. One great way to learn accounting is through working as an accountant assistant. This provides them with hands-on-experience in the accounting
field.
Individuals who begin their accounting careers as a staff accountant will
need to obtain a four-year college degree. Staff accountants are responsible
for preparing, recording, and processing accounts payable. They are also responsible
for maintaining daily, weekly, and monthly financial reports. For a new graduate,
the starting salary for a staff accountant is very generous. Accountants with
experience can expect considerably higher salaries.
Careers in accounting may also include senior level positions such as financial
analyst and Director of finance. Three to five years of accounting experience
is required for financial analyst, while Director's of finance generally hold
a Master's degree and have seven to ten years of experience. |
