Health Careers
Health careers may encompass much more than becoming a doctor, nurse, or medical
assistant. When we think of occupations in the healthcare field, these positions
will likely come to mine. However, several individuals who are interested in
a health career are choosing paths different from traditional medicine. Alternative
health careers are becoming increasingly popular. We live in an age when people
are concerned about natural ways to treat their illnesses. Prescription drugs
cause many adverse side effects, and rising cost of health care is forcing
many to purchase insurance plans with little coverage.
Alternative health careers include occupations such as hypnotherapy, music
therapist, herbalist, and so forth. Hypnosis is not a new concept. However,
using this form of deep meditation for medicinal purposes is new. This unique
treatment involves placing a patient into a deep trance or meditation. In this
state of mind, the patient focuses solely on the hypnotist, blocking out surrounding
sounds. The hypnotist re-directs the patients mind while they are in a trance.
When the patient awakens, they are generally cured of weaknesses and are willing
to face challenges that proved too difficult prior to the trance.
Music therapist use music for therapeutic purposes. These individuals are
generally very talented musically. Music has a special way of creating a certain
mood. Music therapists work with adults and children who are mentally handicapped.
The purpose is to connect with these individuals in order to assess their abilities
and needs.
An additional alternative health career would be travel nursing. Similar to
nursing positions in a hospital or doctor's office, travel nurses care for
patients needs. The only difference is that their location changes. Travel
nurses may be assigned jobs in their hometown, or they may be required to work
out of town. This could potentially be an exciting and rewarding career choice
for nurses who want to expand their horizon.
